PBO-based FRCM for anti-seismic strengthening of the Oratorio della SS. Annunziata in Colorno, PR

Structural strengthening with PBO composite materials for anti-seismic refitting on a historic building damaged during significant seismic event

Ruregold FRCM PBO-based structural strengthening systems with composite materials were used repair, consolidate and restore the Oratorio della SS. Annunziata in Colorno, in the province of Parma. The oratory, which was built in 1568 and rebuilt in 1720, is located within the area affected by the earthquake that struck the part of Emilia-Romagna to the south of the Po Valley in 2012. The building suffered significant damage to turrets of the bell-tower and the wooden parts of the bell operating mechanisms.

The solutions implemented by Ruregold involved the use of high-safety materials and complex techniques, while maintaining the integrity and value of the original structure.

Structural and anti-seismic strengthening

The anti-seismic safety work on the building involved implementing a solution consisting of PBO-Mesh 22-22 in PBO fibre and MX-PBO Masonry, cementitious fibre-reinforced inorganic matrix, together with the PBO-Joint connection system, consisting of PBO fibre connectors and MX-JOINT inorganic matrix, designed for use with Ruregold FRCM systems.   The work was divided into various phases, during the initial phase, the plaster was removed from the upper part of the bell turrets, after which the damaged and cracked parts of the four columns of each turret were repaired by “unstitching-restitching”, where the detached parts were removed, cleaned and washed, the mortar repaired using NHL 3.5 class M5 type hydraulic lime mortar, reusing the original stone segments where possible, and taking care to repair the anchorings.   Once strengthened, the columns of the turrets were wrapped in PBO-Mesh 22-22 mesh, embedded in a coat of MX-PBO Masonry mortar, and anchored using PBO-Joint fibre connectors with MX-JOINT inorganic matrix. The surface was then finished with a specific, lime-based restoration mortar and a coat of colour in the same shade as the rest of the building.
