CRM reinforced plaster for structural strengthening on a historic building in Catania

Structural repair of masonry structures in a historic building using the CRM Reinforced Plaster system

The structural and anti-seismic strengthening work, carried out using Ruregold CRM reinforced plaster and Leca CentroStorico slab strengthening systems, successfully completed the energy re-qualification of the Palazzo Zappalà Tornabene, an eighteenth century building situated on one of the oldest streets in the historic centre of Catania, while also securing the structure of the edifice.

 

Thanks to technologically advanced specifications of the Ruregold and Leca solutions, it was possible preserve the distinctive architectural character of this historic building while ensuring it meets the current standards.

Structural and anti-seismic strengthening

The structural and anti-seismic strengthening work involved reconstructing the building roof covering and its wooden supporting structure, in addition to strengthening the slabs and the masonry structures. The latter activities were carried out using the structural consolidation and strengthening systems developed by Laterlite and marketed under the Leca and Ruregold brands. The masonry was strengthened using the CRM reinforced plaster system to increase strength and ductility. The system consists of the G-MESH 490 mesh, coupled with the G-MESH CONNECTOR connection system, G-MESH GUSSETS for distributing the stress concentrations, the G-MESH ANGLE angle elements and MX-CP Lime mortar. The CRM System reinforced plaster was easy to use and apply: thanks to the rigidity of the materials and their compatibility with every type of masonry, the CRM system is suitable for use on any site or building. The consolidation and strengthening work on the slabs was carried out using Leca Adhesive Bonded CentroStorico Connectors while, during the re-qualification process, the strengthening casts and collaborating slabs were realised using Leca CLS 1400 and Leca CLS 1600 lightweight, structural concrete premixes.
