Ruregold FRCM PBO-based structural strengthening systems were used to carry out maintenance work on twin viaducts in via del Fosso di Dragoncello in Rome.
The work in Rome was carried out on two adjacent triple-arch viaducts sustained by a system of continuous static beams on multiple supports spaced 14.80 m, 17 m and 15 m apart, reinforced with rows of smooth rebars. The concrete component of the beams was severely degraded, due to both normal deteriorated of the structures and the impact of motor vehicles.
In order to restore the original static functionality of the two structures and guarantee the necessary levels of safety, Ruregold implemented a solution where MX R4 Repair mortar was used to restore the deteriorated concrete parts, together with the FRCM strengthening system, consisting of the PBO MESH 70/18 mesh and MX-PBO Concrete special inorganic matrix.
The work involved eliminating the deteriorated substrate by means of hydro-demolition and sand-blasting until the remaining concrete was found to be acceptably compact, and then brushing the concrete rebars to remove any rust. Once the rebars had been treated with Ruregold passivator, the missing concrete was restored and the concrete cover repaired using MX-R4 Repair Mortar, after which the FRCM strengthening system was applied. This involved applying a primer coat of MX-PBO Concrete matrix, in which the PBO MESH 70/18 mesh was embedded, followed by a second coat of MX-PBO Concrete matrix.
